If any software is running that is not part of the security subsystem for Mac or Windows, then any application can pop its windows on top of another application. The real solution is for applications to be more obviously configurable to allow you to quickly turn on and off the "On Top" behavior. I'd say Growl is even worse than Outlook notifications, because it displays messages from, say, Twitter, which can contain much more -- shall we say -- unfiltered language and commentary than emails. Imagine having tweets pop up onscreen as you present. Awkward! I could do a test to see if Keynote suppresses Growl notifications, but I'm feeling sick. And lazy. And I'm bettign it doesn't, so hello embarrassment!
